Facts & Benefits
Treetop Stables in Inverness is a family run business with over 15 years of experience. Their fully qualified members of staff provide a wide range of services from horse riding lessons to treks. When the business owners decided to build a new property, they looked for a heating system which provides low cost heat and would also fit into their carbon management plan. Korrie Renewables suggested installing a biomass boiler along with a solar thermal system. This will not only provide a low cost form of heating but will also provide a RHI income, whilst being a carbon neutral source of heat.
The biomass boiler installed is a Herz Pelletstar 45kW boiler. This is automatically fed with wood pellets from a fuel store with a capacity of 4 tonnes. Heat produced by the boiler is held in a buffer tank with a capacity of 1000 litres. The installled solar thermal system supplements the biomass installation by topping up the hot water in the buffer tank, reducing the demand on the boiler. This reduces the running time on the boiler providing further savings.
This new system provides heating and hot water at a much lower cost compared to oil. An equivalent oil system will cost up to £2,500 a year more to run. In addition to the fuel cost savings, the biomass systems will emit 15 tonnes of CO2 less than the oil system. The stables are also be eligible for RHI payments which are worth up to an estimated £5,000 a year.
